CaptainAquatics Fins & Scales
CaptainAquatics Fins & Scales mission is simple; Spread the love of Aquatic life, Reptiles, and Amphibians.
We do this through reptile encounters, aquatic and herpetology educational shows, and a couple of additional services.
Who runs c.a.f.s? Why?
Hi there!
My name is Alex! I run everything, and I mean everything! I upkeep and maintain all of the animals, run the website, the social media, I do the shows, and, well, you get the picture. But who am I? Why am I doing this? and what exactly am I doing? Those are great questions and I made this page to answer just that!
Lets start off with a little about myself!
I am a lifelong Vermonter passionate about Aquatics and Herpetology (the study of reptiles and amphibians). My journey began when I was 10 with beta fish, and by 11, I was hooked with my first aquarium. I quickly filled my childhood bedroom with fish tanks. As my hobby expanded, I moved to the basement to accommodate over a hundred species of fish and aquatic invertebrates.
Eventually I began my venture into reptiles started with a ball python from Petco. Within a year, I had 8 snakes, 3 types of lizards, and 2 frogs! In the same year I also completed the summer Master Herpetology course from The Amphibian Foundation, certifying myself as a Master Herpetologist. As I continue my personal hobbies I am now also looking to turn them into a career!
Now why am I doing this?
The motivation behind everything I do is simple: I want to spread my passion of Aquatics & Herpetology to others. Its not enough to just go show people animals and talk about them, I want to inspire people to get involved, become truly interested. The world of Aquatics and Herpetology is so misunderstood, with many misconceptions and outdated ideas surrounding them. Its an ancient misunderstanding, with the root word of Herpetology, “Herp”, literally meaning “Creeping”, which implies that these animals are inherently “Creepy”. This is something I am determined to change in the world view.
Now what exactly am I doing?
While I have many goals for CaptainAquatics, we all have to start somewhere, and where I am starting is in the world of education—particularly educational shows. I offer in-person reptile educational shows and encounters, traveling to schools, birthdays, and any other events that wish to book me. Online, I offer educational shows in both reptiles and aquatics through Zoom and Teams. These shows are tailored to each individual request to provide the best experience, ensuring that each and every experience is unique. In addition to these shows I also provide aquarium consulting, helping businesses or individuals create their dream aquarium!
